Digital Cameras

Capturing images without the need for film is the greatest advantage of the digital camera. Other than the limitations on battery size, this type of camera can be very small in comparison to its film cousin. You no longer have to send photos to a developing lab to have the pictures blown up or adjusted as long as you have a home computer. Captured images are stored as bytes or binary information; ones and zeros to most people and are referred to as pixels.

Strangely, both types of camera focus light onto a surface that captures an image using a set of lenses. The only difference between a digital camera and film cameras is how they capture this light inside the camera itself. A charge couple device is the light capturing device in the quality models that is used to convert light into electrical signals and as far as the user is concerned, an image is saved just like an ordinary device. The less expensive capture system called CMOS is generally in lower end cameras and probably won't replace the more expensive CCD although it does an admirable job.

The price has been depreciating recently and one of the main reasons for this is the introduction of CMOS image sensors; because CMOS sensors are less expensive and are easier to manufacture than CCD sensors. Whilst both the CMOS and CCD systems both capture an image using millions of solar cells to make up the whole picture, they perform this in slightly different ways Information to help you choose a suitable model of camera is mention in this review. Image quality is important or it will be waste of time taking them so look for the highest megapixel model within your price range; with the prices continually dropping, high resolution cameras are now more affordable.

Always choose a digital camera with an optical zoom as this will enable you take pictures without any distortion; portrait shots that require 'framing' are so much easier with a an zoom facility. Today's nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries are very powerful and last for around a 1,000 charges so always use these if you want to save money. If you want to do more than just take snap shots, look for a model that is high on functionality to create stunning photos you can be proud of; examples are listed below:

  • Picture frame effects
  • Continuous shooting
  • Mosaic effect shots

You will also need something to store the captured images on especially with the high megapixel models available today. Think 1GB as a bare minimum with today's high resolution models so if you're a photo junkie you can takes pictures of just about anything.

If you are going to be taking your camera everywhere, choose a handy and portable model. There is no longer any need (even for keen amateur photographers) to carry around large, heavy models if you don't have to. Hopefully, these few tips will be enough to steer you in the right direction when you come to buy your camera. The digital camera has reinvented photography for the masses and this is a trend that looks set to continue.
